Pohatu Penguins
Little Penguin Video Series
With over 900 breeding pairs, the Flea Bay/Pōhatu colony of kororā, or Little Penguins, is one of the largest little penguin colonies on the South Island of New Zealand — and it is set on a sheep farm. A few decades ago, the farmers of Flea Bay established Pōhatu Penguins as a conservation and ecotourism organization to protect and control the area in which the penguins live, and to help with predator control and habitat building. Today, the organization has expanded to include conservationists and scientists as they grow the rehab and research work done on the colony.
Throughout 2024, I am working with Pōhatu as a solo filmmaker to create a series of informational videos and short documentaries on the kororā, Põhatu’s rehab and conservation work with them, and marine protection on Banks Peninsula.
